For the good of Fashion
For the good of People
People are at the center of our sustainability initiatives. We want to create communities that are empowered by fair wages, equal opportunities, and good working conditions. While we do not manufacture our clothes directly, this doesn’t let us lax on issuespertaining to human rights, health and safety, and the welfare of those who form an integral part of our value chain.
From setting up a dedicated internal team that monitors supplier compliance to providing the workers with a fair living wage to supporting our manufacturers with sustainability tools, skill development, and training — we take long strides to ensure inclusivity, diversity, and dignity of labour in our pursuit of creating a world where fashion opens doors to social and economic prosperity of our people.
Health and Safety
The issues of health and safety are paramount to us. Our stringent complaint measures ensure that harmful chemicals that endanger the safety of workers are kept out of our manufacturing process, with the company red listing and restricting the use of 225 environmentally sensitive chemicals and those known to cause health implications on long-term exposure. This is followed by regular factory visits and audits, with a dedicated team that works with suppliers to train, educate and create awareness among the workers on safety protocols and safe working conditions.
Fair Wages
Splash is committed to working only with ethical suppliers and factories that provide fair wages, equal opportunities, and good working conditions. Our specialized sourcing team ensures suppliers’ compliance with safety & health regulations and labor laws with a thorough vetting and auditing process, and together, we further fair and equal opportunities for everyone involved in our value chain. Splash also encourages our suppliers and manufacturers to join the Higg Index, which evaluates a facility’s social and environmental compliance. By 2022, 41% of our suppliers completed self-assessment and third-party verification for Higg FEM.
No Child Labor
Splash has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to child labor. We condemn all forms of child and forced labor and take strict measures to safeguard the rights of children. While we do not engage in business with suppliers who defy child labor laws, we also ensure strict compliance by making our suppliers sign on the agreement on our anti-child labor policies before entering into business with them.
Planet
To be sustainable is to look to the future with new hope.
Our vision for sustainability is to create a future where individuals, communities, and businesses thrive without exploiting and depleting our natural resources. With our conscious measures, we drive the change towards a circular, renewable, and closed-loop fashion economy, where we aspire to give back more than what we take from the planet.
Our approach to sustainability has always been precautionary and preventive in nature. From material selection to manufacturing to packaging to logistics and the afterlife of the garments we consider the complete lifecycle of a product and its impact on the planet at the design stage itself. Products go into development only after their sustainability performance is measured using Splash’s Material Sustainability Index (MSI) tool. Splash’s areas of impact have been significant through our recent sustainability programs:
Circularity
Circularity is all about consideration. For centuries now, we have been used to buying without a thought, wearing for a brief period, and discarding our clothes without caring about their environmental impact. This linear approach has to change, and we need to find ways to close the loop and stop this mindless pilfering of our natural resources. Our circular approach to sustainability happens at four critical stages:
Life After Fashion
Love The Ocean
Microplastics are endangering the oceans and the marine ecosystem, and the fashion industry has been a part of the problem for a long time. As one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world, we know that it was our responsibility to take a stand and ensure that we do our part to replenish and protect our oceans. Splash has made conscious efforts to reduce the amount of plastic used in our business. We have replaced our polybags with compostable substitutes made from corn starch that disintegrates into organic manure. By replacing our yearly use of 80 million plastic bags with biobased compostable bags, Splash can now reduce our total material carbon footprint by approximately 300 tons per year.
Recycling PET
Another ocean-positive innovation has been the use of recycled polyester in our clothes. Recycled polyester is manufactured using recycled plastic PET bottles, and they perform as well as 100% virgin polyester. By recycling PET bottles, we stop them from reaching landfills and contaminating the soil, air, and water. The production of recycled polyester is less polluting than virgin polyester and causes 55% less carbon emission. They also require 53% less energy for production compared to virgin polyester.
Eco 360° Approach to sustainable product development
We know that as one of the biggest retailers in the region, leading the change is our moral responsibility. We do not take this lightly. Every garment that comes out of Splash is a product of innovation, where we make a conscious choice to work with natural materials that are renewable and biodegradable to reduce our environmental and water footprints.
Our unique 360° approach to sustainability has helped us use the power of innovation to challenge the fast fashion model of inconsiderate production with a more responsible process that reduces our impact on the environment and the people.
Using sustainable and biodegradable raw materials like sustainable viscose, modal and lyocell sourced from certified manufacturers, we design products that are built to last in a closed-loop process using renewable energy sources.
Better Cotton
It is in our DNA to innovate. To be brave in our pursuits for excellence and embrace changes that are better for the planet. Cotton is one of the most popular fibers used in the textile industry, but conventional methods of growing cotton cause significant harm to the environment and people. Though cotton is a versatile and comfortable fabric, traditional cotton production is a labor and water-intensive process that heavily relies on pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals that pollute waterways and threaten human health. Its production requires millions of people to work endless hours, and most of the time, the socio-economic conditions of cotton farmers are concerning. To find a better solution to the limitations of conventional cotton farming, Splash decided to become the first brand in the Middle East region to partner with the Better Cotton initiative to help improve cotton farming processes globally.
Better Cotton is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing efficient cotton cultivation practices. It is the world’s leading initiative for cotton sustainability, whose sole mission is to help cotton communities survive and thrive while protecting and restoring the environment. Better Cotton offers training to cotton farmers and creates awareness on water efficiency, caring for soil health, protecting natural habitats, reducing the use of harmful chemicals, and respecting the rights and well-being of the farmers.
Today 95% of cotton garments are made using responsibly sourced cotton. We are committed to making sustainable choices accessible to our consumers without compromising comfort or value.
FSC certified Sustainable Viscose
We are committed to finding natural and sustainable alternatives to synthetic fabrics like acrylic, polyester, and nylon. A silk-like fabric, viscose has been a popular fabric with a rich history dating back to 1883. The garments made from FSC certified sustainable viscose at Splash are biodegradable and cause less carbon emission in their manufacturing.
FSC-certified viscose is sourced from sustainably managed plantations that transform the pulp into the fabric using low-toxicity solvents in a closed-loop process, making them a far superior alternative to traditional viscose that involves a chemical-intensive production process.
Lenzing Tencel
TENCEL’s Lyocell and Modal Fibers have emerged as a viable alternative to traditional textiles thanks to their higher environmental performance. While these fibers maintain ecological balance by integrating into nature’s cycle, they are also produced in an eco-conscious way that preserves the environment.
The production of these fibers does not contribute to deforestation or habitat destruction and has a recovery rate of more than 99%, with the solvent spinning procedure using only recycled water and repurposed solvent.
These fibers are 100% biodegradable, highly absorbent, and have excellent moisture management properties, making them ideal for activewear and other performance textiles.
Animal Welfare
We are committed to preserving the flora and fauna of the planet and are conscious of our production impact on animals. While we are determined to limit the use of animal products in our supply chain, we also ensure that the products we source come from certified suppliers who adhere to our Animal Welfare policies.
Leather Working Group (LWG) certified products
The fashion industry is notorious for its environmental impact, and the use of animal-derived materials like leather is no exception. The tanning process used to transform raw animal hides into usable leather involves a lot of chemicals, many of which can be harmful to the environment and human health. Additionally, the livestock industry that provides the raw materials for leather production has a considerable environmental impact. To address these concerns, we have limited the use of leather in our products and use only LWG- certified leather. The LWG certification is issued by Leather Working Group - the largest single leather-focused group in the world, and they attest to the sustainability and eco-friendliness of products.
Responsible Down Standard
We comply with Responsible Down Standard, an independent, voluntary global standard that recognizes and rewards best practices in animal welfare. It ensures that the down and feathers we use in our garments are cruelty-free and come from farms that follow ethical practices of animal husbandry.
Eco-friendly finishes. Enhanced Comfort
By extending the useful life of our clothes, we ensure that they serve you for a long time and can be carefully reused and recycled. Along with the use of eco-conscious materials, most of our garments are treated with special coatings to enhance the comfort, durability, freshness, and wearability of the clothes.
N9 Pure Silver
This treatment provides a long-lasting, odor-free, clean effect on the clothes by destroying odor- causing bacteria using N9 pure silver technology. This breakthrough technology is compatible with multiple substrates and processes and protects from germs with impressive environmental credentials. Most intimate wear, socks, lingerie, and activewear at Splash are treated with this Sustainable Anti-Bacterial finish powered by N9 Pure Silver technology.
The edge that the technology enjoys is that it is gentle on the environment with minimal silver loading and very low Ag+ emission. The technology, listed by OEKO-TEX Standard 100, is safe on the skin and environment. Its non-leaching properties ensure that it remains intact on the treated textile, which implies there is minimal loss of silver into the environment or onto the skin.
HEIQ VIROBLOCK
HEIQ VIROBLOCK is an effective and safe antiviral treatment for your clothes that inhibits the growth and persistence of bacteria and enveloped viruses on textile surfaces.
Cool IT
To keep you fresh and sweat-free, we use COOL IT, a strong cooling agent that generates up to 3°c cooling when in contact with sweat and moisture.
Color Lasting
The specially selected dyes fade-proof your clothes and help them retain their colors even after repeated washing. They also mitigate the risk of color bleeding and ruining your clothes while washing.
Stain Resistant
Products are treated with special finishes that prevent water-based staining. They require less frequent washing and conserve water and energy by keeping the clothes fresh and stain-free.
Neu Dri Tech
An inventive technology that wicks perspiration from the skin and transfers moisture to the textile’s surface, Neu Dri treated clothes keep you comfortable all day long. It is a sustainable technology with minimum environmental impact.
Stay White
This finish retains the whiteness and newness of clothes even after multiple washing.
Eco-denim. Better denim
Water conservation is an ongoing effort at Splash, and we have been advancing our efforts to be more judicious with water usage in our production. Manufacturing denim is one of the most water-intensive processes; when we examined the lifecycle of a pair of denim jeans and assessed the impact at each stage— we realized that with technological intervention and innovations, we could make your favorite pair of jeans better for you and the environment. This led to the birth of our Better Denim.
Thanks to water-efficient technologies like Jeanologia and the neo-dyeing process, our denim now consumes 85% less water than regular denim, with recycled water used to cover most of the production cycle.
We moved away from traditional methods which used:
Recycled
We are in the middle of a climate crisis. While sustainable practices will slow down the use of scarce resources and environmental degradation, it is important to find a way to clean up the mess that already exists. Recycling is not a virtue anymore but a duty.
Our recycling efforts have led us to clean up plastic debris from the oceans and reimagine them as beautiful, recycled fabrics.
Recycled Polyester
One of the challenges of using recycled polyester is ensuring that the materials are properly sourced and processed. In some cases, recycled polyester may still contain harmful chemicals or additives that can impact human health and the environment. To address this, we have implemented strict standards for sourcing and processing recycled polyester, and have ensured a mandatory 3rd Party certification, Global Recycled Standard (GRS), for each style that has been labeled as Recycled Polyester. These standards ensure that the materials are traceable, have been processed without harmful chemicals, and meet the necessary environmental and social criteria.
Recycled Nylon
Nylon, one of the strongest plastics, is one of our go-to fabrics when we need a lightweight fabric that performs. However, nylon is made from petroleum- resulting in a high energy cost and greenhouse gas emissions. We have reduced our raw material dependency on virgin petroleum by using recycled nylon. The majority of recycled nylon comes from post-industrial waste fibers and old fishing nets, providing an excellent solution to divert garbage from the ocean. These recycled nylons use less energy and fossil fuels yet have the same benefits and physical properties as virgin nylon.
80% of nylon used this season is recycled nylon, and we hope to fortify our efforts to further reduce our dependency on synthetic products in the coming years.
The proof of our commitment is in our willingness to go beyond.
Being an ethical and responsible company, we have always worked toward increasing the level of transparency in our business. From being the first retailer in the Middle East to be a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition Initiative (SAC) to using the Higg Index tool to measure, track and account for our sustainability performance and that of our suppliers, we are trying to ensure accountability and traceability at every step of our operations.
Higg Index
Developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), Higg Index is a suite of tools that help companies measure their social and environmental impact across their value chain. Splash uses the five tools of the Higg Index to benchmark and make improvements to our sustainability performance.
The product tools, including the Higg Material Sustainability Index (MSI) and Higg Product Module (PM) and lifecycle tools, give insights into the environmental impacts of producing raw materials and products. They help us understand the environmental consequences of different choices and help us make necessary changes to make the product more environmentally friendly. With the Facility Tools, including the Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM) and Higg Facility Social & Labor Module (FSLM), Splash assesses the social and environmental performance of our facilities and identify opportunities for continuous sustainability improvements in our facilities. They measure seven environmental and nine social management categories.
The Brand & Retail Tool, the Higg Brand and Retail Module (BRM), is an assessment that gives insights into the social and environmental performance of brands and retailers. This tool helps brands and retailers identify opportunities for continuous sustainability improvement in company operations. It measures 11 environmental and 16 social management categories. Splash has made significant progress in completing the Higg FSLM and FEM assessments. We have also completed our BRM verification in 2023 and achieved a score of 19.7% in Environment and 30.9% in social. Though there is room for further improvement, with a powerful tool like Higg Index, we have managed to bring accountability and transparency to our process.
Further, Splash successfully persuaded 26.21% of our suppliers (by value) towards completing their Higg FSLM assessments and 39.2% of Suppliers (by value) towards completing their Higg FEM assessments.
SAC
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is an industry-wide group of apparel and footwear brands, retailers, non-government entities, academicians, and industry experts who work towards minimizing the environmental and social impact of the apparel and footwear industry. Splash is the first regional brand from the Middle East to be a part of the SAC initiative.
Sustainability is not a one-man job; it requires leaders and doers from different echelons of society to come forward and work as one team. By joining SAC, we hope to drive positive change through dialogues and action while continuing to actively participate in initiatives of SAC, including its working groups and task forces, and focus on issues on water use, chemical management, and supply chain transparency.
A key asset of SAC is the development and implementation of the Higg Index, which helps companies, including Splash, evaluate and monitor the sustainability performance of their operations.

SAC (2 / 2)
